Academy Graduates Graduate from a POST Certified California Basic Academy (within the last six months is preferred), or currently enrolled in a POST approved basic academy.  A copy of the applicant's graduation certificate from a POST approved basic academy or proof of current academy enrollment must accompany the application.

Lateral Entry(Experienced Peace Officers as defined by California Penal Code Section  830)

Candidates must have one year of successful full-time service with a California law enforcement agency as a Police Officer. A copy of the applicant's  Basic POST Certificate must accompany the application.  All applicants must possess a valid California Class C Driver's license.

SPECIAL NOTE: Those persons re-entering law enforcement who have completed a POST Certified basic training course, or its equivalent, but who have had a three year or longer break in service must be retrained or complete the Basic Course Waiver process (contact Commission on POST for procedure D-11 at (916)  227-3891 or www.post.ca.gov).  The three-year period will be determined from the last date of employment as a California Peace Officer, or from the date of last completion of a basic course, or from the date of  the last issuance of a basic course waiver by POST, whichever date is most recent.

The SELECTION PROCEDURE

Written and Physical Agility Testing:  Applicants must obtain a passing score on the POST standardized written and physical agility examinations.  The written examination may be waived for qualifying lateral police officers only.

Oral Appraisal Interview Appraisal of general experience, education, judgment, problem solving ability and communication skills. Those candidates who are categorized as "Qualified" will continue in the selection process.

Background Appraisal: Completion and review of detailed Personal History Statement. Candidates meeting basic criteria will continue with a background investigation.

Comprehensive-Background Investigations:  A detailed investigation of the candidate's  personal history and suitability for employment as a law enforcement officer based on the job dimensions identified by the Commission on POST. The background investigation includes a polygraph examination, a  psychological evaluation and a medical examination that includes an illegal drug screening.

The Chief of Police may select/appoint any individual who has successfully completed the selection process.  All appointments to the position of  Police Officer are probationary for eighteen months.
